Things not to do in Thailand

Thailand, also known as the Land of Smiles is widely known for its indomitable hospitality, ultramodern cityscapes, age-old Buddhist traditions and diverse culture. Among all the South-East Asian countries, it is widely considered by travellers for its blend of modern amenities, tropical beaches, lush rainforests and sacred spaces. And a large part of it is because of the ever-friendly Thai people, who are considered as some of the most hospitable people in the world.
And while this means you will feel at home when you visit this tropical paradise, it’s also imperative to note that Thailand is a cultural pothole and the people follow the customs earnestly. As a traveller who’s visiting the country, you are expected to know some of the local customs and common courtesies so that you don’t end up red-faced. It will also help you to connect with the local people easily which in turn ensures that you have a memorable experience in Thailand. In order to have a complete experience, also make sure that you carry an International roaming SIM Card for your travels.
Never hug a monk : Buddhism plays a very important role in Thailand and as a result of this, monks are highly respected here. They are forbidden to touch women and won’t even hand them something. Instead, they place the object down for the women to pick up. Even in transport services, women are not allowed to sit next to monks. Men are allowed to come in contact with monks, but most of them still keep a respectful distance.
Never keep your shoes on : This is one important point you should definitely follow as Thai people find it disrespectful if you enter temples or even shops with your shoes. In most of the restaurants, you will be asked to remove your shoes outside before you set foot within. And if you get confused about whether to leave your shoes outside or not, the pile outside any establishment should help you out. Make sure that you don’t point your feet towards anything or push things around with them as it’s considered extremely rude.
Never touch someone on the head : While it’s common across many parts of the world to pat someone or ruffle their hair, it’s considered offensive in Thai culture. In Thai Buddhist tradition, the head is considered as the highest and holy part of the body and as such, you should also avoid doing the same when you are in Thailand.
Never insult the royal family : Showing disrespect to the monarchy can land you in deep trouble. The royal family is highly regarded in Thai society and as such, it is disrespectful to say anything against the royal family.Even stepping on Thai money is highly offensive as it displays images of the members of the royal family.
Be an informed traveller and know about some of the local customs prevalent in Thailand before you visit the country. It will keep you from unintentionally disrespecting the local culture and make your stay more comfortable.
